An insiders guide to the Brexit Negotiations

As the UK and EU enter into a protracted period of negotiations, it is worth noting what 2 different views on what negotiating with the EU looks like. Below is a summary of what was said in the embedded videos.

The BBC recently spoke to Yanis Varoufakis on negotiating with the EU.

Brussels impedes negotiations. They will be pushing London towards a defensive stance through leaks and distortions. Their strategy will be to make Theresa May fight for her right to negotiate.

"There will be no real negotiations”

What is driving the EU in these negotiations?

The greatest nightmare for the powers that be in Brussels is a mutually advantageous deal with the UK. This would encourage other nations and regions to make further demands, create apathy and ultimately demand an exit from the EU.

On the other hand the UK has made Freedom of Movement the number 1 issue for them. This is above the needs of UK Financial Services, Industry, Agriculture or Universities.

Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, David O'Sullivan referenced similar difficulties for the UK but from a different perspective

They have opted to leave...and it would be extremely naive to think that you could walk out the door and carry on as if you were still a member.

There is a difference in being a member of the EU and not being a member of the EU - that is why so many countries are looking to join up. Leaving the EU has consequences. The UK is looking to negotiate a comprehensive free trade agreement - this will take years.

  • The EU - South Korea free trade agreement took 2.5 years.
  • CETA took nearly 8 years.
  • The EU - Japan free trade agreement is nearly concluded and this took 8 years.

You cannot simply replicate the seamless market arrangements that comes with being a member of the EU, into a trade deal. You can not simply 'cut and paste' what is in the various treaties and put them into a trade deal. It will take 5 or 6 years to negotiate a comprehensive trade deal - what do we do in the meantime?
