We hosted the Inaugural Cork Chapter IAPP KnowldgeNet event
We recently hosted the inaugural IAPP Munster KnowledgeNet event in Cork City.
We were delighted to have a number of privacy and data experts on the panel, namely:
- Kate Colleary, IAPP Country Leader for Ireland
- Tadhg Nagle, Information Systems Lecturer/Researcher at University College Cork
- Laura Flannery from the Data Protection Commission
- Jason Burns, GDPR Lead at IBM
The format was a breakfast briefing with a panel discussion. About 50 people turned up and there was a lively debate with a number of questions coming from the floor. As expected, most of the questions were for Laura Flannery who was representing the Data Protection Commissioner. Laura reiterated that while there was going to be no grace period, a big priority for the DPC was to promote good data privacy practices rather than impose big fines.
Focusing on staff training was highlighted and Kate Colleary said that in her experience the state and semi-state companies in Ireland were in a good place with this. They have done a lot of work in educating their staff about Data Privacy.
Auditing and Understanding your data is also crucial. Tadhg Nagle from UCC highlighted the fact that studies have shown that as much as 93% of the data being held by some large organisations is not providing any value.
Laura Flannery also indicated that even though Direct Marketing could use ‘legitimate interest’ under certain circumstances – there was no scope in using it for cold calling.
The event lasted about 1 hour 20 minutes and are delighted with the positive feedback we received.
